Therapeutic Support

My therapeutic practice is intersectional and client-centered. Drawing on numerous therapeutic modalities you can be assured the therapeutic support you receive is specific to suit your individual needs.

Intersectional Therapy - A therapeutic approach that recognises the existence of co-occurring and intertwining experiences. As a person, you can not be compartmentalized, you exist within a multitude of spaces (e.g. race, gender, sexuality, brain differences). Holding an intersectional therapeutic lens means that the many facets of you are acknowledged, appreciated, and supported, and that your experiences across all contexts contribute to your identity and wellbeing.

Therapeutic Approaches - The many therapeutic approaches I draw on include: neurodiverse-affirming care, psychodynamic psychotherapy, attachment theory, cognitive behavioural strategies, acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion-focussed therapy, and psychoeducation.

Working with Young People - I believe it is imperative that caregivers are involved in their children’s therapeutic support to ensure a holistic and integrative approach to the young persons social and emotional wellbeing. This means, with the young persons consent, caregivers are invited to join sessions either in their entirety or for a portion of time. Parent sessions are also available.

Assessment

I offer several assessment options, as each individual is unique and therefore their needs and hope for understanding also differs.

Cognitive Assessment

This is a standardised psychological assessment that helps us understand an individual's thinking abilities. The areas assessed typically consist of the following: Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory, Processing Speed.

All of the 5 above domains determine a person's Full Scale IQ (FSIQ).

Psychoeducational Assessment

This includes a cognitive assessment (as described above) as well as a standardised test of academic achievement. Assessing both thinking abilities and learning abilities helps indicate potential discrepancies between cognition and learning. An academic achievement test compares an individual to same aged peers across Australia and can help understand a person's strengths and differences in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and oral language.

A Psychoeducational Assessment is most meaningful for school aged students that demonstrate strengths (high achieving) or differences (struggles in certain areas) in academic learning.

Neurodevelopmental Assessment

A neurodevelopmental assessment is typically requested if we are considering neurodivergence such as Autism or ADHD.

For young people - this assessment may incorporate both a cognitive assessment and educational assessment as well as other areas of functioning including executive functioning (higher order thinking skills incl. attention) and adaptive functioning (daily living skills).

For teens and adults - a cognitive assessment and educational assessment aren’t typically necessary for late teens and adults. Such assessment may instead include areas of functioning such as executive functioning (higher order thinking skills incl. attention) and adaptive functioning (daily living skills).

*please note: although trained in the administration of the ADOS-2, I do not use this assessment tool in my practice. This is a conscious decision based on advice and advocacy from the Autistic community who have highlighted the harm that has been caused by this assessment tool, particularly for individuals primary-school aged and beyond.
